The link between environmental and project management is also reflected in the ISO environmental standards. For example, ISO 14001 sets criteria for an environmental management system and can also be certified. It offers a framework that an organisation can follow to set up an effective environmental management system. Their standards are designed for any type of organisation, regardless of the concrete activity or sector of operation. They guarantee the management of an organisation and its employees as well as stakeholders and partners that environmental impact is constantly being measured and bettered.
The ISO 14000 family standard provides requirements with guidance for use that relate to environmental systems. These are groups of voluntary process-oriented tools that are related to changing approaches to process management at the organizational level that are aimed at reducing environmental pollution.

There are many reasons why an organization should take a strategic approach to improving its environmental performance.
